Levee remediation works begin along the Lower Murray

The works will return the flood-damaged sections of the Mypolonga, Pompoota, Long Flat and other levees to their pre-flood height.

Works are finally underway on the restoration of the Lower Murray’s levees, 18 months after most of them broke during the 2022-23 floods.

The intermediate remediation works will return the flood-damaged sections of the Lower Murray Reclaimed Irrigation Area levees to their pre-flood height.

Work on the Mypolonga and Pompoota levees began last week, and the Long Flat levee will be next.

Government levees that require remediation works will remain closed until the works are progressively completed and safe access is determined over the next 12-18 months.

Those that don’t require work will remain closed pending the outcome of a full condition assessment and a safety risk assessment.

Government-owned levee banks include Cowirra, Neeta, Wall Flat, Pompoota, Mypolonga, Mobilong, Burdett, Long Flat, Monteith and Jervois.

It was back in February that the federal and state governments announced $17.1 million in funding for damaged government-owned levees.

Another $14.2 million was allocated to the remediation of privately-owned levees.

Access to private levees is at landholders’ discretion; however, access is not permitted where remediation works are being undertaken.

The Department for Environment and Water has promised to keep the community informed of the project’s progress, including when levees may be accessible to the public, through its website and newsletter.
