Our News, Your Voice: Donate to Murray Bridge News today

The following is the author’s personal opinion.

In today’s world, I believe local news is more important than ever.

Misinformation and rubbish are flooding our social media channels.

Evening TV bulletins are full of crime, disasters and not much else.

We’re supposedly more connected than ever, yet many people tell me they only find out about community events after they’ve already happened.

Meanwhile, print and radio outlets are merging, downsizing or closing at a rate of knots, consolidating media ownership in the hands of a select few.

Murray Bridge News exists to make a difference.

We are 100 per cent locally owned and operated.

We focus on positive stories about people here in the Murraylands doing awesome things, like honouring veteransgiving first aidhelping people who are homeless, or even just creating some art.

Our weekly Things to Do column includes every event we can find, whether they’ve paid to advertise or not.

And most of our stories are free to read, because we believe everyone deserves access to information that can help them stay safe, cast an informed vote, or feel more a part of their community.

That’s important – it’s why we do what we do.

It’s why, four years in, I still choose to invest in growing this business rather than paying myself a market wage.

And it’s why, this week, we’re asking for your help.

This week, Murray Bridge News is one of 33 independent local publishers around Australia taking part in the Our News, Your Voice campaign.

We’re asking for donations to help us continue to serve our region and its people.

What’s special about this week, June 3-7, is that every donation will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Local and Independent News Association (LINA).

Your donation will help us tell important local stories like the need for more food relief in our region, advocate for repairs at Thiele Reserve, cover community events and meetings after hours and on weekends, and unearth stories you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Send us proof of your donation and we’ll gift you a free trial subscription, or extend your current subscription, to say thank you.

Murray Bridge News exists to make a difference, and with your help, we will.

So please, if you can, support local news by donating today.

Thanks,

Peri Strathearn
Managing editor

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly suggested that the ABC would contribute to the dollar-for-dollar matching of funds raised through the Our News, Your Voice campaign. LINA will be solely responsible for matching the funding. We apologise for the error.
