Murray Bridge’s New Year’s Eve celebrations postponed
There will be no fireworks off the bridge to end 2022.
Murray Bridge’s New Year’s Eve celebrations will be postponed in the face of the coming River Murray floods.
For the past three years, the city’s council has launched fireworks off the 1879 road bridge as part of a family-friendly celebration at Sturt Reserve.
However, much of the reserve is likely to be underwater on December 31.
Council CEO Michael Sedgman said the event would be rescheduled for another date.
The council looked at relocating the celebration – East Terrace, in front of the Bridgeport Hotel, was mooted as one option.
However, Mr Sedgman expressed caution about hosting any kind of celebration, or spending public money on fireworks, during the height of an emergency.
“This summer our focus needs to be on keeping people and property safe, and supporting those affected by the flood,” he said.
The council will consider staging a comparable event once the floodwaters go down.
