In a win for movie-lovers, the Murraylands’ only cinema will reopen early in the new year.

The credits rolled for the last time at Murray Bridge’s Cameo Cinema back in July, ending a 47-year run, and the Kennett family put the building up for sale.

But a passion for cinema isn’t something you can switch off like a projector.

So, on Wednesday, the Kennetts announced that they would reopen the cinema on January 2, 2025.

Its foyer has been spruced up, with fresh paint and new TV screens to show ads for the coming attractions; and there will be a few minor upgrades to the candy bar.

The cinema’s doors had been covered over in recent weeks to hide any evidence of the renovations before Wednesday’s announcement.

Tickets for the films that will be shown in the cinema’s first week back – Paddington in Peru, Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Better Man – will go on sale in the coming weeks.

There are no plans for this to be a temporary reopening, either.

Family member Larry Regnier told Murray Bridge News that, with enough audience support, the Kennetts hoped to keep the cinema open as an ongoing concern once again.
