A Murray Bridge student has been recognised at the 2025 Motor Trade Association of South Australia and Northern Territory awards.

Sophie Duell was named the most outstanding school-based apprentice of the year last Friday thanks to her attention to detail and drive, setting her apart from the 800 nominees.

"I had high hopes for myself and it was thrilling (to win the award)," she said.

At just 16 she's recently finished her year 12 studies and is nearly half way into her apprenticeship with Eastside Autobody.

"One of my favourite things about working here is the environment; obviously a women in a male dominated industry is nerve racking and hard but (my coworkers) make it so easy."

Sophie is completing her certificate three in automotive refinishing technology and is now beginning full time work with Eastside Autobody.

In year ten she completed work experience with the autobody shop and from that point on she fell in love.

"I'm a painter and seeing the start to finish process, that's the best part."

Sophie's advice for other young women wanting to get into the industry would be to rely on the support and resources around you.

"There was an independent learning centre through my school that helped me a lot as well, with being flexible and helping out with planning."

"Another thing that helped me the most was just the people around me, supporting me."
