Murray Bridge man arrested after siege
Plus police arrest two alleged drug smugglers at Mobilong Prison and search for a stolen solar-powered gate.
Police have captured a 20-year-old Murray Bridge man after a siege on Frances Street last Wednesday.
Officers rolled up to an address on Jarvis Avenue, Murray Bridge at 11.30pm after reports of a disturbance, and were told a carload of people had just left – one of whom had a gun.
They were able to identify the people involved and soon found the car parked on nearby Frances Street.
Local officers set up a cordon around a home there, STAR group officers were called in and, after a negotiation, two women were allowed out of the home.
Police then went into the property and allegedly found a 20-year-old man hiding in a roof space with a gel blaster.
He was charged with possessing a firearm without a licence, threatening to kill and traffic offences, denied bail, and kept in custody ahead of a court appearance in Murray Bridge on Friday.
Two arrested for trying to sneak drugs into prison
Meanwhile, police have made two more arrests in connection with their efforts to prevent drugs being smuggled into Mobilong Prison.
A joint operation with the Department of Correctional Services took place at the prison on Friday and Saturday.
Arrested were a 44-year-old Port Wakefield man, for trafficking and three counts of possession; and a 34-year-old Wynn Vale woman, for possessing a controlled drug.
Police also arrested another woman in connection with drug-smuggling at the Adelaide Remand Centre; and gave out nine fines for traffic offences.
Detective Inspector Amanda Lewis said police and Corrections were determined to stop people bringing contraband into prisons.
“You run a strong chance of being caught if you choose to take the risk,” she said.
“These seizures ... at Mobilong Prison (are) indicative of our commitment to support DCS and quell the supply of drugs and other contraband.”
Police had previously made six other arrests in November and December.
