Murray Bridge High School principal, students shave for breast cancer fundraiser
Principal Ruth Mussger and a dozen students have submitted to the buzzers for a good cause.
Four enterprising students at Murray Bridge High School have raised more than $3000 for charity – and they convinced their principal to get her head shaved in the process.
Students Courtney, Sasha, Adam and Ben launched a fundraising campaign for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in August, hoping to contribute to life-saving research.
“A bunch of brave and eager people” soon signed up to shave their heads, so they decided to issue a challenge.
Would principal Ruth Mussger join them?
Yes, she said – so long as they raised at least $2000.
They hit the target within a fortnight.
An enthusiastic crowd filled the school gym on September 18 to watch the students and Ms Mussger go under the buzzers.
Onlookers were asked for a gold coin donation, and by the time of publication, the campaign had raised more than $3100.
Funds raised will go towards research into better ways of diagnosing, managing and treating breast cancer, which affects 20,000 Australians each year.
Since the foundation was established in 1994, its fundraising efforts have helped improve breast cancer survival rates by 43 per cent.
