Changes will come to the off-leash area for dogs at Murray Bridge’s Johnstone Park come September 9.
The park will get improvements including:
- Renewal of the perimeter fencing and installation of a double gating system “doggie airlock” to meet minimum dog park standards
- Reconfiguration of the small and large dog areas
- Installation of a new shelter
- Relocation of drinking fountains
The dog park will be closed to the public for approximately three weeks while works are underway.
Cathy Smith, owner of Pip and Knox, said she mainly came to the park in summer.
Her two pups ran around happily while she soaked up the warm weather that’s starting to appear.
Upgrades to the park were based on community feedback from a consultation in November 2021, which received a total of 110 responses.
A draft design has been revised since the changes were first announced in May.
The new design has seen the removal of a proposed car park area, relocation of a proposed shelter and reconfiguration of the small and large dog areas.
As a result, small dogs will have access to their designated area without having to cross through the large dog section.
Deb Richardson, acting general manager for community development, said she was excited to see the project commence.
“These improvements will provide a safer and more enjoyable environment for our community’s dogs and their owners,” she said.
“We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation during the construction period.”
During the closure residents and visitors are encouraged to explore Murray Bridge’s other dog off-leash areas, which include:
- Kuchel Park on Lachlan Avenue
- Tim Overall Reserve on Janice Street
- White Park Reserve on Gladstone Street
