Mark Trenwith, better known as Mr Snotbottom to a legion of youngsters, is headed to Murray Bridge at the end of this month.

The SA-born, Melbourne-based comedian and actor of 15 years is mostly known for his successful children’s theatre creation, Mr Snotbottom, who has sold out shows across Australia and at the Edinburgh Festival to audience and critical acclaim.

Mark started his kids’ comedy journey in 2012, as soon as he graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Creative Arts.

Initially part of an independent theatre company which visited schools, he was booked for a solo gig at a seven-year-old’s birthday party.

It changed everything.

“A child who had attended one of the school shows asked his parents if I could come to his upcoming birthday party – but only if I told a lot of fart jokes,” he says.

“I wasn’t sure that was the direction I wanted to head in, but I gave it a go, rewrote what I already had and added in a bunch of stupid undertones and carefully placed noises to keep the kids entertained.

“It was hugely successful and resulted in lots more bookings, so Mr Snotbottom was born and is still going strong.”

Mark has performed at all the major festivals, but still has a love for regional touring and country audiences.

“I love discovering new parts of Australia, and the long drives really suit my temperament,” he says.

“Anyone who has done this work knows that some of the motels aren’t exactly five-star, but I’ve met loads of lovely people and it’s always nice to come back and catch up with familiar faces.”

Some of those familiar faces reside right here in the Murraylands.

“I love coming to Murray Bridge as it gives me a chance to catch up with family members that I don’t get to see too often, due to my touring commitments,” he says.

Kids’ comedy hasn’t changed much in the past 15 years, Mark says, but he is always tinkering with the show to keep it fresh so his fans keep coming back, and to maintain his own excitement.

“The same things are still funny today as they always have been, but the snot and fart jokes have to be carefully placed, they kind of have to be a surprise, or they don’t get the laughs you hope for,” he says.

Mr Snotbottom has been named the best performer at the 2023 Newcastle Fringe and won a gold medal for the best children’s podcast at the 2023 Aus Podcast Awards for Busy Bodies, which combines scientific facts and big laughs for a perfect blend of “ewwy education”.

“There’s no reason why we can’t learn and laugh at the same time,” Mark says.

If you’ve got youngsters aged five and up who are into the ooey, gooey, stinky, yucky things kids love, catch Mr Snotbottom in Murray Bridge on April 24.
