Elephants confirmed for Monarto after fundraising campaign reaches its goal
Zoos SA has raised more than $2 million, needed to bring three Asian elephants to Monarto Safari Park, in just 28 days.
Three Asian elephants will soon move into Monarto Safari Park after a $2 million fundraising campaign reached its goal in less than a month.
Just 28 days after Zoos SA announced the campaign, public donations – including one of $1 million – got the job done.
The funds will be spent on a new habitat at Monarto for Permai and Putra Mas, from Perth Zoo, and Burma, from Auckland Zoo.
Chief executive Elaine Bensted said any additional funds would reduce the amount of money Zoos SA would have to divert away from other projects.
“While we’ve reached our original goal, I want to assure everyone that all funds raised over this amount will still go to the elephants’ project,” she said.
“Any extra money raised now will help Zoos SA to reduce its financing costs for the project and allow us to ensure our efforts remain focussed on the conservation work we undertake.
“We are a private charity, so any debt that we can reduce only speeds up the process of paying it off and allowing us to get back to our work to save species from extinction.”
Upcoming fundraising events include a fun run through the park on October 21.
The elephants will help the safari park continue its Wild Africa expansion.
