An experienced local government executive has been appointed the next CEO of the Mid Murray Council.

Andrew Johnson will start with the council on August 10 after a “comprehensive” recruitment process.

His resume includes stints as CEO of the Walkerville and Port Pirie councils; board roles with the Local Government Association of SA and other sector bodies; and a background in economics and accountancy.

Dr Johnson said he looked forward to becoming part of the community.

“Mid Murray is a council with significant opportunities and a clear vision for the future,” he said.

“I have been impressed by council's commitment to improving its long-term financial sustainability while maintaining a strong focus on delivering outcomes for its communities.

“I look forward to getting out across the region, meeting people and building relationships.”

Mayor Simone Bailey said Dr Johnson had been the outstanding candidate during the recruitment process.

“Andrew’s experience leading councils, combined with his strong financial background, advocacy experience and collaborative approach, gives council great confidence that he is the right person to lead the organisation into its next chapter,” she said.

“Council remains focused on building a financially sustainable organisation while continuing to support our communities and advocate strongly on behalf of our region.

“We look forward to working closely with Andrew as we continue that work together.”

Dr Johnson’s appointment was the second by a Murraylands council in the space of a week, after the Coorong council picked Scott Reardon last Friday.

It also represents the first of two steps in a leadership changeover for the Mid Murray district.

Ms Bailey plans to step down at the next election, which was recently delayed until next April.

Previous Mid Murray Council CEO Ben Scales left the council recently to take on a role as CEO of charity organisation Foodbank SA and NT.
