Mannum Road railway crossing blocked after second crash in two months
Emergency services have responded to a collision between a train and a car in Murray Bridge.
A crash involving a car and a train has blocked one of Murray Bridge’s busiest roads for the second time in as many months.
Emergency services responded to a collision between a sedan and an eastbound train at the railway crossing on Mannum Road around 12.45pm on Tuesday.
The car’s driver and only occupant was not seriously hurt.
However, the train’s driver had to pull it to a stop, blocking the crossing for some time afterwards.
The nearby Cypress Terrace crossing remained open – just barely.
It is the second time an accident has occurred at the Mannum Road crossing in the past six weeks.
There was another on October 29.
Even so, a majority of commenters on Murray Bridge News’ Facebook page did not think boom gates needed to be installed there.
“No way should anyone miss a train coming there if they’re paying attention,” one said.
However, another commenter urged everyone to think of the train drivers involved in collisions at level crossings.
“They have to live with PTSD for hitting a car, and possibly having the person die, through absolutely no fault of their own,” she said.
“If (putting) up boom gates could stop train drivers having to go through that, isn’t it worth a try?”
