Police have laid charges against a 35-year-old Kanmantoo man after the death of another local man in a road accident on Monday morning.

A Kawasaki motorbike collided with a Ford ute at the intersection of the Old Princes Highway and Plantation Road just after 7am.

Although paramedics raced to help, the 39-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene.

The driver of the ute was not physically hurt.

Later on Monday morning, after inspecting the scene, police arrested the surviving driver and charged him with causing death by dangerous driving.

His licence was suspended indefinitely, but he was granted bail ahead of an appearance at Mount Barker Magistrates Court on August 12.

The offence of causing death by dangerous driving carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that may help police with their investigation should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.

The man’s death – the 44th on South Australian roads this year – occurred on the first morning of Road Safety Week.

Twenty-five of those deaths have been on regional roads, and 11 have been motorcyclists – both figures significantly higher than last year.

Last year 87 people died on South Australian roads, and more than 2100 were injured badly enough to need medical treatment.

Every such tragedy on our roads would stay with families forever, state Police Minister Michael Brown warned.

“Reducing the lives lost and serious injuries on South Australian roads is a key priority for the (state) government,” he said.

“Road Safety Week reminds us all that our choices behind the wheel directly save lives.”
