K&S Industries plans $4.5 million sawmill in the Murraylands
The company recently signed a 10-year supply agreement with Forestry SA.
Almost 20 jobs will be created when a $4.5-million sawmill is built in the Murraylands.
A company called K&S Industries plans to build a mill in the region after winning a 10-year contract to process timber from state forests in the Adelaide Hills.
The Victorian company currently operates a mill at Nuriootpa.
Its plan was revealed by David Basham, the state Primary Industries and Regional Development Minister, when he announced the outcome of a Forestry SA tender process earlier this month.
“In a strongly competitive national and global market for timber, it is exciting to see local sawmills successfully secure contracts with Forestry SA,” he said.
“These supply contracts will help support South Australian businesses and local jobs.”
Federal MP Tony Pasin welcomed the “exciting” development.
“The timber industry is a sustainable, carbon-positive industry with huge potential for growth,” he said.
“As someone who has campaigned strongly to see Aussie logs supporting Aussie jobs, I could not be happier.”
Two other timber processing businesses are already based at Monarto.
SA Pine, formerly Recut Industries, produces decking, sleepers and construction timber; while SA Sawdust Sales supplies sawdust and shavings to the agriculture industry, plus soft-fall woodchips for playgrounds.
Construction-grade timber has been hard to get during the past year due to a housing boom in Australia and around the world, driven in part by government incentives.
