A Riverglades home has been badly damaged by a fire which broke out in a garage on Sunday night.

Firefighters were called out to the two-storey home on Torrens Road around 8.15pm.

They got there within minutes, but even in the rain, the fire had already started to spread to the ground floor of the house.

They were able to keep it from spreading to the top level, but the property sustained about $400,000 worth of damage.

Twenty CFS volunteers in three trucks and a command vehicle were supported by police, paramedics, MFS firefighters and SA Power Networks personnel, as well as neighbours who did whatever they could to help.

Fire cause investigators were expected to attend the scene on Monday.

Four done for traffic offences

Meanwhile, police have reported a Mannum woman for dangerous driving after she narrowly avoided a head-on crash at Poltalloch on Monday afternoon.

Police allegedly witnessed the 21-year-old attempt to overtake a B-double on the Princes Highway, on a double white line, heading towards a blind corner.

Her Holden and an oncoming car were apparently forced to brake and swerve to avoid each other.

Officers disqualified the woman from driving for 12 months on the spot.

Police have also caught up with a handful of other motorists over the past fortnight, including:

  • A 30-year-old Murray Bridge woman who allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.084 while driving on Hindmarsh Road around 10pm on Anzac Day; she lost her licence for six months, had her car impounded and will face court
  • A 70-year-old Norwood man allegedly caught speeding in an 80 zone on the Old Princes Highway, on Murray Bridge’s east side, at 11.30am on Anzac Day, allegedly while unregistered, uninsured and using the wrong number plates; his vehicle was impounded and he’ll face court
  • A 22-year-old Murray Bridge woman allegedly caught driving while unlicensed on Cawte Street just after 6pm on April 24; she was reported and will face court

Four more drivers across the Murray Mallee region were reported for drug driving over the weekend of April 24-27, lost their licences for three months and may face court.
