Summer is the perfect time to unwind by spending some time on the River Murray, and this Murray Bridge business can help you live the dream.
Freedom Boat Hire have set up a new hire business on the riverfront at Sturt Reserve this summer, renting out boats of all kinds to tourists and locals alike.
The venture has been set up by Stu and Anna Horsman, who regularly hire out ski boats to anyone with a licence but wanted everyone else to be able to have fun on the river, too.
“Something like this needs to be here in Murray Bridge,” Stu says.
“We know how busy (the riverfront) gets in January … people just want to go for a cruise or take the kids on a tube, or they want to have a kayak.
“It gives us one more exciting thing to do in the Bridge, and you don’t need to have a lot of time or any experience.”
Between Boxing Day and the Australia Day long weekend, seven days a week, you can hire:
- Pedal boats for a relaxing time on the river with your family – no prior experience needed
- Single or double kayaks for those who want to experience nature up close
- Stand-up paddle boards and Fliteboards – electric hydrofoils – for anyone who rates their ability to balance
- A five-person ski boat and tube couch for thrill seekers, or the boat by itself for anyone who just wants to cruise on the river
Instructions and safety equipment, including life jackets, is provided – all you need to do is roll up.
Stu and Anna launched the hire business just before Christmas, and it quickly proved popular.
Several visitors even drove up from Adelaide just to experience the River Murray for a few hours.
“The pedal boats are an absolute huge hit, the most popular thing we have,” Stu says.
“We get … all sorts of families, all different nationalities.
“The feedback has been really good.”
Freedom Boat Hire is open on the riverfront, near the Murray Bridge Club, from 10am-3pm daily, weather permitting.
If the period from December 26 to January 26 goes well, the Horsmans hope to extend their season and come back bigger and better next year.
In time, they hope a quick spin on one of their boats will be as essential to any Murray Bridge visit as seeing the bunyip and munching on a savoury slice.
“It’s exciting, it’s adventurous, there’s something for everyone,” Stu says.
“Even if you can’t swim, you can come for a boat ride.”
