Murray Bridge’s two Lions Clubs, with support from the Australian Lions Foundation, have combined their fundraising to purchase and install a Cancer Council sun squirt kiosk at the city’s swimming centre.
The $6000 machine dispenses sunscreen to anyone who needs it while they’re enjoying their day in the sun.
Murray Bridge Lions Club president Hylton Moritz explained how it came about.
“I was looking through a magazine and saw a picture of it and decided it would make a good project for our club,” he said.
“As we also support the Lions’ sun smart cancer caravan, which visits communities around South Australia, it all seemed to fit together quite nicely.
“Hopefully we can remind people to be sun smart, which may help to prevent some cancers in the long term.”
The machine was assembled in Sydney and shipped across the country.
The Lions Clubs will be responsible for keeping the dispenser filled.
Murray Bridge Swimming Centre senior lifesaver Peter Eckert was happy to see the kiosk installed.

“We always welcome lots of kids and families to the pool and hope they have a fun day out,” he said.
“We’ve noticed that some visitors don’t seem to have sunscreen handy, so having the kiosk here should really make a difference.”
The Cancer Council sun squirt kiosk is located directly opposite the main entry gates and is free to use.
Sunscreen can help protect against skin cancer, a disease experienced by two out of three Australians by the age of 70.
The last day of the summer swimming season, after which the pool will close for the winter, will be Easter Monday, April 6.
