Former Murray Bridge woman convicted for dangerous driving after crash
The woman's sentence consists of home detention and a licence suspension.
A former Murray Bridge woman has been convicted of multiple driving offences in relation to a crash near One Tree Hill in May 2021.
The woman was sentenced by Judge Ian Press in Adelaide’s District Court on August 30, having pleaded guilty to one count of contravening a learner’s permit and three counts of aggravated dangerous driving causing harm.
While trying to negotiate a gentle left bend on Black Top Road, her car drifted diagonally onto the wrong side of the road, continuing into pine trees that lined the road.
No signs of braking or other attempts to avoid the crash were found at the scene.
A blood sample taken soon afterwards showed she had recently used methylamphetamine.
Judge Press described the injuries sustained by the woman’s three children as a result of the crash as “not life threatening, but nor were they minor”.
He imposed a penalty of home detention for two years and 10 months, with a non-parole period of one year and five months.
He also suspended her licence for seven years.
“The decision to drive when under the influence of drugs … is to be deterred,” the judge said.
“As long as people put their own convenience before the safety of others, people will continue to be injured and killed on the road.”
The woman had been in the process of moving from Murray Bridge to Elizabeth to escape an abusive ex-partner.
