A free workshop is being held to help land managers understand how to produce and use bio fertilisers.

The workshop will be on a farm at Brinkley on September 24, with teachings about why bio fertilisers are a valuable resource that can improve farm yields.

The event will step through processes of how to improve soil health and performance.

David Hardwick from Soil Land Food, who will host the day, has extensive experience in the development of bio fertilisers, agronomy and soil health.

Bio fertilisers contain living organisms, including bacteria and yeasts, which
stimulate plant growth and increase soil health.

More land managers are considering bio fertilisers as a practical part of their approach as they can be made on-farm as a cost-effective price.

Barrie Williams, landscape board soil extension officer said that the day would include processes on how to make a fermented lactobacillus culture, a fertiliser rich in microbes that boosts soil fertility and health.

“We’ll also be cooking up a batch of bio fertiliser that is rich in micronutrients, and a hydrolysate by recycling fish products which is capable of increasing soil fungi and providing trace elements in a plant-available format,” he said.

“(It's) a highly cost-effective way to feed plants while also tailoring fertilisers to address specific constraints and deficiencies.

“They are easily scaled for any size farm ... the cost of set-up is relatively inexpensive and the process uses equipment that most farmers would already have in their shed.”

Registrations are essential and attendance includes lunch and take home resources.
