Filipino flavours will be feted at Murray Bridge cafe
Local resident Joy Goodridge will convene a celebration of the culture and tastes of the Philippines next week.
Murray Bridge’s Ability Café will host a vibrant Filipino cooking demonstration next week, offering visitors a chance to experience food, cultural dancing and storytelling from the Philippines in one welcoming evening.
The event will be convened by Joy Goodridge, who will also share insights into traditional Filipino dress and cultural history.
Dressed in a beautiful Filipino cultural costume, she explained that the attire represented how people had dressed for important occasions in earlier times.
“It’s a tradition that is still proudly carried on today to represent our nation’s heritage,” she said.
She also spoke about the Philippines itself, a tropical country comprised of more than 1700 islands.
“There are so many white sandy beaches, beautiful warm waters and countless small islands,” she said.
“Locally, the Philippines is known in the Pacific for its natural beauty and a very strong sense of community.”
It’s something she hopes to share with those attending.
The demonstration, supported by the Murraylands Migrant Resource Centre and Genuine Support Services Australia, will include the preparation of classic Filipino dishes commonly enjoyed at family gatherings.
One of the highlights will be pancit, a traditional Filipino noodle dish that symbolises togetherness and celebration.
Guests will also be introduced to biko, a popular glutinous sweet rice delicacy that is rich, comforting and deeply rooted in Filipino food culture.

Alongside the cooking, attendees can expect light cultural dancing and an informal discussion about the history and traditions of the Philippines, making the evening both educational and enjoyable.
The event will run similarly to the usual Wednesday night GSSA Ability Café cooking class, meaning regular attendees won’t need to change all their participation methods.
The community demonstration is scheduled for 4-6.30pm on Wednesday, February 25 at the Ability Café, 4 Seventh Street, Murray Bridge.
Everyone will be welcome.
Don’t miss out on taking home a delicious Filipino meal.
