Dogs now allowed off-leash at two more Murray Bridge parks
The city’s council is trialling new conditions for dogs at Avoca Dell and on Tumbella Drive.
Dogs are now allowed to roam free at two more Murray Bridge parks – with some limitations.
The city’s council has opened up Avoca Dell Reserve and Tumbella Drive Reserve as off-leash areas, where dogs can run around and chase sticks and balls to their hearts’ desire.
However, the arrangement will only apply at certain times:
- 6-9am and 5-8pm during daylight savings (now until April 7)
- 6am-6pm during winter months
It will only be on a trial basis, too, until June 30, 2024.
In the meantime, development and regulations manager Sally Roberts said, the council wanted to know what local dog owners and other residents thought.
“Council is working to establish a network of suitable places where people can safely exercise their dogs off-leash, to improve the health, fitness and general wellbeing of our furry friends and their owners,” she said.
“We are really keen to hear how people respond to the opportunity this summer.”
The off-leash trial was originally planned for last summer, but the River Murray floods forced the council to hit pause until last Thursday.
A 2021 survey found that 83 per cent of locals were in favour of more off-leash dog parks in Murray Bridge, and that riverfront locations were preferred.
Until last week, dogs were allowed to roam off-leash at just four locations in the district: the Johnstone Park dog park, White Park, Kuchel Park and Tim Overall Reserve.
