Readers are invited to join a Croakey Go – a walking journalism event – at the Moorundi Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Murray Bridge, on Ngarrindjeri country, next Wednesday, March 25.
The event, from 9-10.30am, will be co-hosted by Moorundi, Murray Bridge News and Croakey Health Media, and will be held in association with the annual Local and Independent News Association summit.
In Ngarrindjeri, the word moorundi means “river” and refers to the Murray.
For the people of the Ngarrindjeri nation, the river is where all life begins, and the connection between health and water is intricately linked to the culture of the Ngarrindjeri community.
The Moorundi logo represents this cultural connection to country, waterways and its people.
Moorundi says on its website: “Our first goal, which is central to all the other goals, is bringing community together.”
“We cannot deliver health services merely from a clinical care perspective.
“The health of our community depends on the health of our culture, which depends on the health of our lands.
“When our culture is not well, then our community is not well.
“We are strong when we are together and not well when we are disconnected.”
Participants in the Croakey Go will learn about the range of services provided by Moorundi, its work on the cultural and social determinants of health, and hear from elders involved in advocating for the service’s development over many years.
The service’s new building officially opened in August last year, and was described as “a landmark moment for the Ngarrindjeri community and for Aboriginal-led healthcare across the region”.
The Croakey Go event is free.
Participants are asked to arrive before 9am at 124 Adelaide Road, Murray Bridge.
For those unable to attend in person, there will be reports on social media and at croakey.org.
