Junior basketball in Murray Bridge is on the rebound.
After COVID interrupted the former Bridge Hoops program, a weekly session aimed at entry-level players, the Murray Bridge Basketball Association has brought back something similar with the nationally accredited Aussie Hoops program.
It means more support for coaches and extra training for the kids who come along on a Friday night: five- to 10-year-olds at 5.30pm and 10-15-year-olds at 6.30.
Coach Nick Huxtable said the program was about having fun on a basketball court moreso than developing skills.
Among those in the stands last Friday night was Shaun Williams, watching his kids Blair and Boston.
When did your kids first start playing basketball?
(Blair’s) friends were doing it, so she wanted to do it. When we started there were like 70 kids. Blair has been doing it for two years and Boston for a year now.
What do they get out of it?
They get to play with their friends. We’re getting into lots of different sports to see what they want to play, if they want to play. Blair has done cricket, footy, basketball, netball – we just try whatever they want. They get fitness, fun, coordination, teamwork, they learn to play together.
What have been their greatest achievements so far?
Neither of them could get anywhere near the (basketball) ring before. Now they can both get it in. They couldn’t dribble, they couldn’t do anything like that – their coordination has improved out of sight ... Since coming (Blair) has become a lot more confident.
What do you hope they will achieve as basketball players?
It’s really up to them. I played football, my wife played netball, we’re both life members at Imps, but they can play whatever they want. Whatever they pick is what we’ll run with ... The point of coming is not that they become the next WNBA stars. We just come and have a bit of fun and learn a few skills.
Why should people bring their kids to come and play basketball?
Kids make good friends here. Blair is making friends outside her normal friend group, in a sport that gets played all around the world. You’ve got young people willing to coach them; they’re taking time out of their days so you may as well support them.
