Coffee, cops and canines appear at Murray Bridge Marketplace

A police officer is nothing without their paw-tner.
Murray Bridge residents got to meet two police dogs at the latest Coffee with a Cop event: four-year-old firearm and explosives detective dog Orbit and six-year-old drug detection dog Xera.
Brevet Sergeant Brian Whitehorn said much of his career had revolved around training police dogs.
“I’ve been training police dogs for 22 years, and I’ve worked in the police force for 42 years,” he said.
“It takes about 11 weeks to train the drug dogs and nine weeks for the explosive detection dogs, which is like the base model, to get them out onto the road.”
Senior Constable Kim Ide said events like Coffee with a Cop gave the police an opportunity meet the wider community.
“These events let people connect with police in an informal setting, and maybe have a chat about an issue they might have, or some information about the law, and generally be ale to interact with us when they otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity to,” Senior Constable Ide said.
“Our aim is to have trusted relationships with community members so that way they are happy to contact us if they have an issue or need to solve a problem.”
