The Murraylands and Riverland Landscape board is celebrating citizen science this April by hosting two free citizen science workshops.

The Landscape board in partnership with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) are encouraging people to head out to their local park and get involved.

The two free workshops include:

  • Thursday April 17, Bats of the Bush webinar from 7:30pm-8:30pm
  • Sunday April 13, Kinchina Conservation Park bush BioBlitz from 10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm

April is citizen science month, but what really is citizen science?

Citizen science can involve activities such as recording frog noises or taking photos of different species, enabling everyone to contribute to environmental science and research.

This walk is suitable for keen naturalists of almost all ages and will include a talk from an expert entomologist and how to create a biodiversity inventory on iNaturalist.

Department for Environment and Water Community and Nature Partnerships Manager Helen Donovan said South Australia’s national parks and reserves housed an incredible diversity of animals and plants.

“The great thing about citizen science is that you don’t need a science background or technical knowledge to make significant contributions to important environmental research and monitoring,” Dr Donovan said.

"Often, you just need a keen eye and a mobile phone.”
