Burnouts at Monarto South frustrate local residents

Hoons have turned a quiet intersection at Monarto South into a burnout pad, and police have so far proven powerless to stop them, a local says.
The screech of tyres filled the air on Saturday night at the intersection of Ferries McDonald Road and Chaunceys Line Road
The next morning, burnt rubber was left strewn across the roadway and several damaged tyres were lobbed into the scrub of a nearby conservation park.
This was not an isolated incident, either – tyre marks can be seen even in satellite photos on Google Maps and other services.
“These drivers … keep the residents awake with their burnouts on a regular basis,” the local resident told Murray Bridge News.
“Numerous calls to the police have not stopped their behaviour.”
In a statement, an SA Police spokeswoman said police had been called out to the scene around 10pm on Saturday after a report of two cars doing burnouts, but had been unable to locate any offenders.
However, she encouraged anyone who witnessed hoon behaviour on public roads to report it by calling 131 444.
“Hoon driving is dangerous driving, and this behaviour will not be tolerated on public roads,” she said.
“To put other road users at risk by driving in such a manner is reckless and selfish.
“Police will continue to target behaviour which puts other road users at risk.”
Swags stolen on Second Street
Meanwhile, police are searching for the thief or thieves who stole eight fancy swags from a shed on Second Street, Murray Bridge.
The deluxe Kings-brand single swags were taken from the locked shed sometime between September 14 and 21.
They were previously used for camp-outs with at-risk children.
