Brian Pilmore Classic fishing competition succeeds again
A Murray Bridge fishing competition has attracted a good crowd in 2026.
The 2026 Brian Pilmore Classic has proven a standout on the local calendar, delivering a perfect day by the river and an outstanding celebration of community fishing at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge on Tuesday.
With clear skies, calm conditions and plenty of smiles along the bank, competitors and spectators alike agreed it was “one of those days you remember”.
This year's top honours went to Trevor Thompson of Murray Bridge, who claimed the title with an impressive callop and 108 points.
He was followed closely by his son, Chris Thompson, also of Murray Bridge, who finished second with another callop and 96 points.
Rounding out the podium was reigning champion Kevin Box, of Murray Bridge, who secured third place with a carp on 76 points.
Event founder Brian Pilmore said the day had captured everything he loved about fishing.
“Fishing gives me peace, connection and purpose,” he said.
“Seeing people come together, supporting each other and just enjoying being outdoors – that’s what this competition is about.
“I’m thrilled with how it’s grown, and I’d love to see the club keep growing with new faces and families getting involved.”
The success of the 2026 event has already led organisers to lock in a return for 2027, at a secret location to be announced at a later date.
Looking ahead, the GSSA Community Fishing Club will hold its next meeting and a free community barbecue on March 3 at Avoca Dell, hosting a come-and-try fishing day where club members will support newcomers keen to wet a line.
Organisers are hoping for a strong turnout as momentum builds toward future competitions.
The free community club is proudly supported by Genuine Support Services Australia, BCF Murray Bridge and Farm Fresh Market.
