BMX track construction is about to start at Sturt Reserve
After years of campaigning by local bike riders, a dirt track is being built next to the Murray Bridge skate park.
If you’re a BMX rider in Murray Bridge, your dream is about to come true.
The council announced on Friday that Monday was the day work would start on a new dirt bike track at Sturt Reserve.
The first step will be the demolition of a disused toilet and storage building: not the one near the playground, but the old one across from the former Riverscape Restaurant and future Foggy Lantern.
The new track will feature an inner loop for beginners and an outer loop for more experienced riders, plus a shelter and public seating similar to that at the skate park.
Construction is expected to be finished in early 2027.
The nearby skate park will remain open while the work is done.
The council will invest $230,000 in the new bike track, and local contractors Spry Civil Construction will do the job at a heavily discounted rate.
Mayor Wayne Thorley said the track would uphold Sturt Reserve’s reputation as a destination, as well as supporting tourism and community pride.
“Through the construction of this track, we’re adding another space for families and young people, right alongside the upcoming Pondi play space,” he said.
“It’s all part of making Sturt Reserve a place our community can be proud of.”

Locals had been asking for a new BMX track since 2018, when a series of jumps were removed to make way for an expansion of the skate park.
The council had commissioned several designs for a new track over the past few years, but never allocated funding to any of them.
A petition organised by competitive BMXer Shea Reddington, and signed by more than 800 people, finally helped get the project over the line.
Local bike riders had input into the track’s design and negotiated with Spry, too.
