Australia Post is building a new distribution centre in Murray Bridge to help it deliver more parcels, more quickly, the postal service has announced.
The multi-million-dollar facility on the corner of Brinkley and Hindmarsh Roads will process up to 3700 parcels every day.
It will have an area of more than 1100 square metres – about double the size of the current centre on Adelaide Road.
The extra capacity will help Australia Post cope with the continued rise of online shopping, as more and more locals order items over the internet and get them delivered.
The number of parcels handled by Australia Post in South Australia has risen by 4.9 per cent over the past year.
There had been an even bigger bump in the lead-up to Christmas, spokesman Shane Plant said – about 9%.
“With 80% of South Australian households now shopping online, parcel volumes in regional areas continue to grow,” he said.
“These modern facilities are built to handle that growth, setting us up to support our customers into the future.
“We’ve focused on designing sites that improve safety, increase capacity and streamline transport flow, creating more efficient workplaces for our teams so they can get on the road safely and deliver for our customers.”
Construction of the Brinkley Road distribution centre has already started.
It is due to open in June.

The project will form part of a network-wide investment in parcel delivery services by Australia Post.
The postal service also announced on Monday that it would build new DCs at Port Pirie, Kadina and Tanunda, on top of a $500 million facility already underway at the former Holden site at Elizabeth.
Australia Post delivered 2.2 billion items to 12.8 million addresses last year.
