The time has come again to honour the people and community that make Australia a unique and special place.

Australia Day will be celebrated around the Murraylands this Sunday, January 26.

A free community breakfast for all residents will be held at Edwards Square, Murray Bridge from 7am with the official awards and citizenship ceremony kicking off at 7.45.

The event will feature Australia Day ambassador Daljeet Bakshi, a journalist, media professional and community leader, who will share his inspiring story.

Award categories recognising the contributions of the inspiring residents among us will be citizen of the year, an award for active citizenship and community event of the year.

Last year's recipients included Sandra Walding, the Hub at Darling Avenue and the Rockleigh 105 Gravel Fest.

Mayor Wayne Thorley said the day would provide an opportunity to come together and embrace the spirit of Australia Day.

โ€œThis is a moment to reflect on our shared history, respect the contributions of all who call this community home and celebrate the diversity and unity that makes our rural city stronger,โ€ he said.

Tailem Bend community will get together for lunch

The Coorong district's outstanding citizens will also be recognised on Australia Day at the Tailem Bend Town Hall.

An award presentation and light lunch will be held from 11.30am-1pm on Sunday.

Award recipients have already been announced for three categories: citizen of the year, community project of the year and community event of the year.

  • More information, RSVP: Call Maxine Kiddie, 0439 387 750.
  • Cost: $5 per head for lunch.

Celebrate proudly, MP urges

Federal MP Tony Pasin encouraged locals to attend a community event near them and come together to celebrate.

"We are a nation that is the envy of the world," he said.

"We should be proud of what we have achieved and our standing on the global stage."

Mr Pasin is also offering free "together under one flag" bumper stickers to all Barker residents.

The Mid Murray Council will also be hosting an Australia Day event in Mannum on Sunday 26 January at Mary Ann Reserve.

Brunch will be served from 9am with the awards ceremony beginning at 11am.
