In the absence of any cleaning fairies, it has fallen to Tailem Bend’s Christmas elves to say: our parks and roadsides aren’t going to tidy themselves up.

It will be up to us to make our communities look spic and span for Clean Up Australia Day this weekend.

If you have an hour or two to spare, you are invited to join a volunteer team:

  • Johnstone Park gates, Adelaide Road, Murray Bridge, 8am on Saturday
  • Long Island Reserve, Murray Bridge, 10am on Sunday
  • The Foodland car park, Railway Terrace, Tailem Bend, 10am on Sunday
  • The southern entrance to Tailem Bend, on the Princes Highway, 6pm on Monday

More groups may head out around Tailem Bend on Thursday and Friday, as well.

The theme for Clean Up Australia Day this year is “step up and clean up”.

Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis encouraged all Murraylands residents to do just that, as many hands would make light work.

“With many people spending more time at home over the past 12 months, more disposable packaging and single use items have been consumed by many households and unfortunately some of that waste always finds its way into places it doesn’t belong,” he said.

“Keeping our green spaces and rivers rubbish free helps native flora and fauna to flourish as it should.

“It is a fantastic feeling every year when people come together and show they care about our environment by lending a hand and making a real difference by cleaning up our local spaces.”

Volunteers should wear enclosed shoes and other suitable clothing, including a hat and sunglasses.
