Wellbeing SA and the Murray Bridge council are looking to establish a go-to destination for services that improve local people's lives.

What helps Murray Bridge people lead happy, healthy lives, and where do they go to get it?

The city’s council and Wellbeing SA hope to find out as they consider establishing a local “wellbeing hub” – somewhere people could go to participate in art, education, fitness or other activities that would benefit their wellbeing.

What would that look like?

The hub could be co-located with a community centre, church or club, or set up in a public building, or have a presence at several sites around the district.

The aim would simply be to help people live happier and healthier lives, Mayor Brenton Lewis said.

“If you’re a member of our community, a community organisation, group or business running programs or activities in community spaces, to support physical, social and mental wellbeing, we’d love to hear from you,” he said.
“Your input will provide us with valuable information about the types of programs, groups or activities that a wellbeing hub could offer.”

Local residents are invited to have their say through a survey, and council staff have also been meeting face-to-face with relevant individuals, organisations, groups and businesses.

Wellbeing SA, a government agency, was created in 2020 to help South Australians stay healthy, reducing the sort of problems for which they might need to seek health care down the track.

Per person, the state government spent about $1700 per year on public hospitals, but only $58 per year on preventative health services such as screenings, immunisations and promotional campaigns.

The agency would try to right that balance, its strategic plan said.
