The River Murray Youth Council has opened applications for an exciting environmental leadership program.

The environment-themed leadership program is designed to develop Murraylands high school students’ skills in topics such as natural landscapes, native ecosystems and sustainable agriculture.

The River Murray Youth Council encourages young people’s interest in the environment and allows them to connect with peers and explore their leadership potential during an annual program.

The program includes four meetings, six activity days and one overnight camp.

Landscape board education officer Ilyth Burton said participation would have benefits to young people.

“The River Murray Youth Council is a brilliant way for young people to get involved in managing landscapes and taking action on important environmental issues while developing their leadership skills and building networks,” she said.

“Participation is free, and students have input into the year’s learning program, so activities and excursions are based around the interests of the group.

“Topics could be river health, sustainable agriculture, building nesting boxes for native bird species or learning field skills like frog or fish monitoring”.
