Wanderers and Tailem Bend prepare for Mateship Trophy showdown
Remembrance Round 2026 is here in the Murray Towns Cricket Association and silverware is up for grabs.

Remembrance Round in the Murray Towns Cricket Association will feature Wanderers Cricket Club’s A grade once again hosting the annual Remembrance
Day Mateship Perpetual Trophy at Murray Bridge Showground, with the Woo Hoos preparing to take on Tailem Bend.
There is plenty riding on this contest for both clubs.
By their own standards, Wanderers have made an average start to the season, while Tailem Bend have been competitive but are still searching for their first win.
A victory would be a welcome boost for either side as they look to get their season on track with the Woo Hoos looking to their experienced campaigners to lead the
way.
On paper, Wanderers boast a strong lineup, with co-captains Ben Trenorden and Jalen Kowalick expected to lead from the front.
They will be supported by the experience and guidance of Craig Fidge, Tom Watkins and Riley Stapleton, all of whom will be expected to stand up and be counted when it matters.
However, the Eagles of Tailem Bend should not be underestimated.
With an average age of just 18 and a half, Tailem Bend are a young and
relatively inexperienced side but youth can bring enthusiasm, energy and the
confidence to take on a challenge without fear.
With captain Paul Agalidis sidelined through injury, the Eagles will be led by co-captains Lucas Piggott and Campbell Schubert, who will be looking to lead by example and rally their troops.
Despite the loss of their captain, the Eagles will be hoping their players rise to the occasion, with Brendan Pahl and Mason Kowald looking to continue their good form.
They will also rely on the experience of evergreen Brad Kleinig to help steady the ship and guide the young side.
There is an interesting connection between the Eagles’ youthful line-up and
the history behind the Mateship Trophy.
The trophy’s commemorative sculpture depicts two soldiers associated with the Battle of Kokoda, where young Australian servicemen of the 39th Battalion endured extraordinary hardship and demonstrated courage, resilience and mateship.
It is a fitting reminder that age and experience do not always determine what a team can achieve.
While the cricket will provide plenty of interest, the occasion carries a
significance beyond the result.
Since 2021, Wanderers has hosted the Remembrance Day mateship game
against a different MTCA club each season, providing clubs throughout the
association with an opportunity to compete for the perpetual trophy.
The annual fixture recognises the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force
personnel while celebrating the values of mateship, courage, teamwork and
respect shared by the military and the sporting community.
Both Wanderers and Tailem Bend cricket clubs are calling on past players,
supporters and the wider community to head to the showgrounds and be
part of the occasion.
Proceedings will commence with a brief commemorative ceremony at 12.20pm.
This will be followed by the match and the presentation of the trophy in the clubrooms at the conclusion of the game.
So please join in at the showgrounds, support both clubs and honour
those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.
