Past and present residents of the Geranium and Parrakie communities have met at the newly upgraded Soldiers’ Memorial Park to commemorate Anzac Day.

A new memorial was unveiled in honour of past serving community members.

The memorial is the first honour roll in the district to include local Vietnam and Middle East veterans, namely Kingsley Nankivell, Chris Stone, Michael Temby and Stuart Bond.

Grants from the Lameroo Community Hotel and Southern Mallee District Council made the upgrade possible.

Approximately 150 community members assembled at the gates of the park, where they were welcomed by community chairperson Adam Morgan.

Tania Morgan read a history of the park, acknowledging the grants, before the memorial was consecrated and unveiled by descendants of those named on the wall.

Wreaths and flowers were laid at the foot of the cross, the national anthem was sung and community members were invited to place rosemary on the cross.

The Geranium Bowling Club hosted socialising after the ceremony while community members enjoyed refreshments from the Breaking Bread Takeaway.

The day moved the hearts of the Geranium community and once again served as a reflection to the sacrifice paid by men and women in order to enjoy freedom today.
