Twenty new Australian citizens welcomed to Murray Bridge, and one to the Coorong

Twenty-one people have joined “the greatest club on Earth”, as federal MP Tony Pasin called it, by making citizenship pledges at Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend’s Australia Day celebration this year.
From all the lands on Earth they came: the United Kingdom and Liberia, the Phillippines and South Africa, Sudan and Taiwan.
Mr Pasin welcomed them all, urging them to love their new country and to be proud of it.
“We do truly live in a beautiful part of the world, and we’ve got much to be grateful for and even more to celebrate today,” he said at Murray Bridge’s Australia Day event.
About 200 people were on hand to applaud the new citizens following the presentation of three Australia Day awards.
At Tailem Bend, Wellington East resident Joy Sakuyuma made her own pledge of citizenship as part of a lunchtime event at the town hall.
Coorong Mayor Paul Simmons presented her with a certificate of Australian citizenship on behalf of the federal Immigration Minister.
More than 22,000 people were expected to attend 450 citizenship ceremonies around the nation this week, according to the federal Department of Home Affairs.
