Education jottings
The time for the annual examinations has come round again.
Two pupils of the high school sat last week for the entrance scholarships and country studentship examinations of the School of Mines, and this week those who aspire to pass the intermediate and leaving examinations of the university are going through the mill.
There is a considerable falling-off in the number of pupils of the high school who present themselves for these latter examinations now, as compared with previous years.
This is much to be regretted, and several reasons might be advanced to account for it.
Beautiful gladioli
Mr F Robertson, of Murray Bridge, had come in for a lot of compliments in regard to his gladioli, with which he annexed first prize at the Adelaide Carnation Show against all comers.
A beautiful cluster of these attractive flowers has been displayed in the shop of Mr HB Hawke, the popular chemist of Murray Bridge, opposite the Advocate office, and he has been inundated with enquiries for corms, for which Mr Robertson must feel proud.
Mr HV Raison
The death occurred suddenly at Tailem Bend on Friday last of Mr HV “Vic” Raison, youngest son of Mr and Mrs TH Raison, of Mount Barker, in his 38th year.
He was employed by Mr GR Bolton in the store at the Bend.
The late Mr Raison, who was very musical and whose services in that capacity were very much sought, was married 14 years ago, and Mrs Raison is left with three children.
A beautiful lot of floral tributes were received by the sorrowing relatives, including some magnificent wreaths from the tradespeople of Tailem Bend, the Tailem Bend Brass Band, the Murray Bridge RAOB Lodge, Soldiers’ Settlements, and the employees and staff of Mr Bolton’s store.
