Murray Bridge Catholic Church

The annual fair in connection with the Murray Bridge Roman Catholic Chuch was opened on Thursday by the Reverend Father McNamara, who was previously priest in charge of the parish.

Father McNamara said it was essential that (the parish) should have a school of their own for the education of Catholics.

In the case of the training of the children to be good Catholics, they required their own schools where they could have that good religious atmosphere which was the keynote of their faith.

For that reason it was desirous to bring up their Catholic children in their own schools, and at their own expense, as in those schools they would drink in the tenets of their faith and imbibe in the daily life of the school.

East Wellington

A most successful strawberry fete in aid of the Tailem Bend circuit funds was held in the local hall at East Wellington last Saturday evening, at which approximately £50 was taken.

The various stalls were fitted up very tastefully, and the ladies on each of them are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts to attract buyers.

The stallholders were: strawberries, Mesdames Cross, Braunsthal, Harris and Vanderwig; flowers, Mrs H Stacey; cool drinks, Mr Hannam; ice cream, Mr Harris; refreshments, Miss Cross, Mrs F Stacey and Mr W Chandler; jumble stall, Miss L Winter and Mrs Hannam; branpie, Misses L Young and Lilly Stacey; sweets, Misses M Young and M Winter.

Allegation of forgery

Thomas Matthew Pollock, 22, pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court, Adelaide, on Thursday, November 10, to a charge of having forged and uttered a cheque for £5, with intend to defraud at Mypolonga about September 15.

The Crown prosecutor said the accused bought a cricket bat and a grip for £1 12/6, and paid for them with a cheque drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australia at Murray Bridge, signed apparently by Herbert H Clarke.

The cheque was taken by the seller of the bat, and accused was given change to the amount of £3 7/6.

When the cheque was presented at the bank, the forgery was discovered.

His Honour said 12 months’ imprisonment would be imposed.
