Farmers Union milk products factory at Murray Bridge: Visit of parliamentary party

The party of parliamentarians who made the river trip paid a visit of inspection to the above factory on Wednesday.

They were met by the chairman of directors, Mr Hawkins, directors Mr Pearce and Mr Robert Mitchell, manager of the dairy department Mr EH Frommen and assistant manager Mr AJ Cooke.

“We started two years ago on a supply of 150 gallons on the opening day, and the present supply is now over 30,000 gallons of milk received weekly from the river settlements, and in addition we have 300 dairymen on the Murray lines and up-river settlements who send in cream equal in output to about 11 tons of butter weekly,” Mr Cooke said.

“The policy of the SAFU is to sell as much milk and sweet cream as possible and turn the surplus milk into the most payable product, such as butter, cheese, casein or other dried milk products.

“During the two years that we have been working at Murray Bridge we have paid a higher price per pound of butterfat contained in the milk supplied than any milk products factory in Australia or New Zealand.”

Murray Bridge’s 15th show: Another great success, increased entries and gate takings

The fifteenth annual show of the Murray Bridge Agricultural and Horticultural Society was held on the showground on Thursday, March 26.

From an early hour the president, the Honourable J Cowan, MLC, was in attendance and gave a watchful eye to the various sections while the secretary, Mr AV Pugh, looked to all the details connected with the show from a secretarial point of view.

Excursion fares on the railway were freely availed of; by motor car and charabanc came visitors from Strathalbyn and Callington, Monarto South, Hartley and Pallamana; Mypolonga, Long Flat and Monteith residents were present in large numbers; and Woods Point and Brinkley settlers made a picnic of the show.

Sweet stall dance

Dancing was indulged in until 11 o’clock, when a dainty supper was served.

The following pretty dresses were noticed: Mrs Tostevin, white fur; Mrs Rankine in pink charmeuse; Mrs Pellew, green and silver brocade; Mrs Leahy, black velvet; Mrs Coonan, black georgette; Mrs Macquarie, black georgette; Miss Gosse, white georgette beaded in silver.
