Murray Bridge races

The Murray Bridge race meeting to be held tomorrow promises to be one of the most successful ever held under the auspices of the club.

The official and ordinary luncheons will be in the capable hands of Mr W. Collins, of the Beehive Cafe, who has engaged a staff of 20 waitresses for the season.

The publican’s booth will be in the hands of Mr G.D. Leahy, licensee of the Murray Bridge Hotel.

Olympic crew appeal

The appeal for funds to send the Murray Bridge crew – Australia’s chosen representatives – to the Paris Olympiad is gradually mounting, and it is anticipated that the £2500 which is necessary will be raised in time to permit the crew sailing as arranged.

O.R. Dunstan, secretary of the Murray Bridge Olympic Funds, contemplates meeting the ÂŁ500 mark before the end of the week.

The committee of the town band has agreed to donate all collections taken at their concert next Sunday.

Mothering Sunday

Sunday, March 30, the fourth Sunday in Lent, is commonly known under the name of Refreshment Sunday, or Mothering Sunday, and is the old English Mothers’ Day.

Some of the old traditional customs are being revived.

At Murray Bridge the children of St John the Baptist’s Church will perform a play in explanation of Mothering Sunday in the parish hall on Wednesday, March 26.

The Mothers’ Day service will be at 11am on Sunday, March 30, when special hymns will be sung and “good mothers” will be the theme of the thanksgiving and teaching.

At the close of the service each child present will be presented with a piece of Simnel cake, specially made for the occasion, to give to mother.
