A monstrous proposal

At the meeting of the Murray Bridge corporation on Monday, February 2, some discussion ensued over a letter from the assistant engineer for railways in connection with the new bridge.

He wrote as follows: “In connection with the tunnel underneath Bridge Street, it would greatly expedite and facilitate matters if the said street be closed to traffic for the period of construction of the tunnel.

“The period for which Bridge Street will require closing is approximately three months, to commence about six weeks from date.”

It was felt by councillors that to close the thoroughfare for three months was decidedly unfair and unreasonable.

The owners of the Bridgeport Hotel have been greatly inconvenienced and have suffered great financial loss through the manner in which the roadway passing the main entrance of the hotel has been blocked for months.

Murray Bridge sanitation: A forward movement

At the meeting of the Murray Bridge corporation on Monday, February 2, the question of adopting the septic tank system for Murray Bridge was considered.

The chairman of the local board of health stated that the double pan system of night soil removal and disposal was in vogue; at present the cost amounted to about £1000 per annum.

By striking, for instance, a 4d rate on all properties, the local board could borrow a sum of £15,000 for the installation of a septic tank system of sewage disposal.

The number of houses served by the pan system is about 500.

The local board proposes to collect £5 from the owner of each property on completion of the installation of the septic tank system of sewage for improvements to property.

From a health point of view, such a system cannot be too strongly recommended.

Murray licensing district

The annual Licensing Court for the Murray district was held in the Murray Bridge Institute on Tuesday, February 3.

In the Murray licensing district there are 19 publicans, 24 billiard, four railway refreshment room, one club and one storekeeper’s Australian wine licenses.

By permission of the court, the bar-room at the Bridgeport Hotel has been remodelled and extended; a room formerly used for other purposes has been converted into a saloon bar; and the cellar enlarged.

The new additions at the Murray Bridge Hotel in Murray Bridge are now completed, and the whole of the premises well furnished in modern style.

Inspector Davey interviewed the owner of the Tailem Bend Hotel and informed him that, owing to the rapidly increasing population and increased amount of business done in the township, in his opinion the time had arrived when additional accommodation should be provided … at least 10 additional single bedrooms, two sitting rooms, two bathrooms and two conveniences.

This he said he was willing to do, and would instruct his architect to prepare plans for the same immediately.
