The Premier at bowls
On Saturday afternoon last the Premier, Sir Henry Barwell, and his party were the guests of the Murray Bridge Bowling Club and played a series of games – two rinks – with the local players.
The Premier’s rink managed to defeat Mr Coonan’s rink by 27 points to 23, but the locals skippered by Dr Macquarie put up a lead over the Honourable (Henry) Tassie’s rink, and so saved the situation.
The ladies of the croquet club provided afternoon tea.
Murray Bridge test rowers
The Murray Bridge eight to participate in the test race to decide which crew shall represent Olympia, and which is to be rowed on the Port River on Saturday, March 8, is putting in good work, and the stroke – Mr W. Sladden – is getting the best out of his men.
Teddy Higgs is jubilant over more things than one, and his quiet smile of “I told you so” speaks volumes for his confidence in the eight.
Bob Cummings is encouraging the men from his seat in the stern, and Bob can get a lot more out of his colleagues than most coxswains can.
Every member of the crew knows that the eyes of Australia are on the Murray Bridge boat, and they all express themselves that they will be knocking at the post when the starter’s gun goes.
Clothes make the man
In conversation with Mr Oscar Crabb, the Bridge Street tailor, of Murray Bridge, on Wednesday, he referred to the new styles of gentlemen’s clothing, and produced a recent copy of the Tailor and Cutter, London, which revealed some tempting cuts which are sure to meet with great demand from the man who likes to be well groomed and smartly tailored.
Said Mr Crabb: “You know there has been a steadily increasing demand for tailor-made suits … with the many athletic young men of Murray Bridge, this is an absolute necessity, as their well-developed shoulders are not at all suited to the ready-to-wear suit.
“I don’t think,” he concluded, “that you can find smarter and better set-up young fellows anywhere in Australia than those of the Murray Bridge district, and I think this is due to the fact that they are all fond of outdoor sports, and take an active part in most of the games of the times.”
