Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross: Laying of the foundation stone
Sunday, February 8 was indeed a day of rejoicing and thanksgiving for the Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross at Murray Bridge.
On that day, not only the members of the said church, but also many friends of God’s kingdom, coming from far and near, assembled at the corner of Florence and Charles Streets to witness the memorable act of laying the foundation stone of a new church building.
The foundation stone was laid by the local pastor, J.F. Hansen, in the name of the triune God.
The contractor presented Pastor Hansen with a beautiful silver trowel which bears the inscription: “Presented by P.B. Pobke, esquire, to Pastor Hansen on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross, Murray Bridge, 8/2/25”.
Murray Bridge court house
The much desired, long expected and wearily waited-for court house for Murray Bridge is still in the air, and appears likely to remain in the state of Mohammed’s coffin for a very considerable time.
Away in the dark and distant past of 1914, the then Attorney-General, Mr Herman Homburg, placed a sum of ÂŁ700 on the estimates for the purposes of erecting a court house.
That was the last heard of the ÂŁ700.
Since that memorable time ministers have come and ministers have gone, but the need of a court house, like Tennyson’s brook, goes on forever.
It would be a glorious thing for Murray Bridge if finances permitted the erection of a mansion house which would serve a dual purpose.
But we are as poor as church mice, and unless the government comes to the rescue, the daily drunk and the minor criminal will still have to be tried by sorely tried justices in a dilapidated room.
East Wellington
We have had a most unusual rain for this time of the year, for two or three days steady showers, with damp, dull weather.
A little over an inch has been registered, and as a consequence the ground is now quite green, with seeds of all kinds sprouting so thickly that one would think that every seed in the soil had germinated.
A shower now and again will ensure early feed.
