In 1884, railway workers building the Adelaide to Melbourne line set up at a spot they simply called Pine Camp.
Almost 140 years later, the town that grew out of that colonial settlement – Tailem Bend – has evolved time and again as industries have come and gone, then come anew.
That winding history will be celebrated from 2.30pm this Friday with an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia, entitled The Life and Times of Tailem Bend, at the Coorong Gallery.
Coorong Mayor Paul Simmons said it was important for country towns to celebrate their histories.
“We are extremely lucky to have groups of dedicated volunteers who commit themselves to preserving our history and heritage, ensuring that it is not lost or forgotten,” he said.
“I commend the Tailem Bend Historians for their efforts in putting together an exhibition 12 months in the making, and I look forward to the opening.”
The exhibition will continue until the end of May and form part of the South Australian History Festival that month.
