Tailem Bend Netball Club seeks donations as it rebounds from email scam
The club hopes to raise $50,000 after losing three times that much to a sophisticated criminal operation.
Tailem Bend Netball Club is appealing for donations after losing more than $150,000 to email scammers.
The club fell victim to a false billing scam in April – it received a fraudulent email which directed it to pay a legitimate invoice by transferring money into the scammers’ bank account.
The invoice had been for work related to the installation of the club’s new courts, which had been laid by River City Excavations and Kowald Industries that month.
Lights were also installed by Mike Bristow Electrical.
Netball club committee member Emily Edwards said the loss had overshadowed the excitement of the first training session on the new courts.
“With the situation yet to be resolved, we are left with the daunting task of trying to recoup the large sum of money we are still owing,” she said on the club’s Go Fund Me page.
“We are working tirelessly on as many fundraising initiatives as we can manage, however we are a long way from reducing our debt.”
The club hopes to raise $50,000, but is so far less than five per cent of the way towards that goal.
