A prominent house at Tailem Bend has been destroyed by fire.

Eight units from the Country Fire Service and Metropolitan Fire Service raced to the cottage at the corner of Railway Terrace and Granites Road around 5pm on Wednesday.

But by the time they arrived, the house and a shed were already burning fiercely.

Both were completely destroyed, according to a CFS spokeswoman.

Firefighters were able to save two other sheds and their contents, and kept the fire from spreading to the old station master’s house next door.

With help from police and SA Power Networks staff, and paramedics standing by, they were also able to keep services operating without interruption on the main Adelaide to Melbourne railway line, only metres away.

The house’s owner was not there at the time of the fire, and nobody was injured.

The CFS estimated the damage bill from the fire at $500,000.

An investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
