Supercars will return to The Bend in 2022 after all
The owner of Tailem Bend’s motorsport park says the race series will return despite having left the venue off its draft schedule.
A deal has been struck to bring Australia’s premier motor racing series back to Tailem Bend in 2022.
The Bend Motorsport Park was originally left off Supercars’ draft race calendar for next year.
However, the door remained ajar: one race venue was listed as “TBD” when the schedule was announced earlier this month.
The Bend’s owner, Sam Shahin, announced on Saturday night that South Australia would host that race, on July 30 and 31, after all.
Supercars was also on the verge of signing a contract that would ensure the race returned in 2023 and 2024 as well, he said.
Supercars chief operating officer Shane Howard confirmed the arrangement on Sunday.
“The Bend is a world-class facility that has produced great racing over the past four years, which is why we are excited to be returning again in July,” he said.
“We thank Sam Shahin and his team for working with us to lock this event in for the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship.”
If the race goes ahead on that date, a pedal prix event scheduled for the same weekend will have to move.
The pedal prix’ organisers have not yet issued any public statement about the clash.
