Sports round-up: Little Athletics club recognises young track and field stars

Plus the latest from Murray Bridge Rifle Club.

After a delay prompted by COVID-19, Murray Bridge Little Athletics Club has held a presentation to recognise oustanding performances by its athletes during the past season.

The President’s Trophy was won by under-15 athlete Ethan Watkins, pictured with president Dale Martin.

The Reg Ellis Trophy and Perpetual Shield was won by Brandan Pahl (under 12), from runner-up Hollie Coote (under seven).

Other perpetual trophy winners for 2019-20 included:

Track: Madison Hearne (under six) and Henry Bouts (under 11); runners-up Cianna Watkins (under 11) and Max Sobels (under six)
Jumping: Hollie Coote (under seven) and Jordan Groves (under 12); runners-up Isabella Zacker (under nine) and Kaiden Matrin (under 10)
Throwing: Tilly-Rose Gordon and Harley Holland (under seven); runners-up Helayna White (under 10) and Rohan Martin (under seven)
Tiny tots: Matilda Gillen and Rogan Holland; runners-up Grace Wilkinson and Luca Groves

Sixteen athletes were recognised for having broken club records during the season.

Each participant received a medal based on their performance and personal achievements.

The club will hold its first come-and-try day for the 2020-21 season at Murray Bridge High School from 9am on September 27, with events starting at 9.45.

The first home meeting of the season will be on October 11.

Rifle shooters hurry to get out of the weather

After a warm and bright start, Saturday afternoon gradually grew duller and colder at the Deed Range at Monarto.

Fifteen shooters hurriedly shot from a distance of 300 metres in an attempt to keep dry, successfully managing to battle an increasingly strong wind from the right and making it back to the clubhouse before the rain arrived.

There were several standout scores from the day, not least of which was Nicole Edwards’ second possible in just over a month to prove her first was not a fluke; this time she had enough ammo to complete her round and complemented her possible with a 59 for a very impressive 119.10.

Andrew Heard, pictured above, and Rob Paech also shot possibles in target rifle, both also in conjunction with a 48, with Paech edging Heard out on centres to win top off rifle for the day but with Heard taking out handicap honours.

Ken Lynn, pictured below, and Frank Marshall also managed 59s to help them to secure the day’s honours in F-open and F-standard respectively, but Edwards was far too good, taking out the F-class handicap award by five points.

Several shooters also stood out in the snipers’ awards, given for the most accurate sighters, with Gordon “Too Mean to Miss” Harrison not dropping a point and keeping all his sighters with a 20.02, and Daniel Irvine only slightly behind with a 19.01.

David Hindmarsh was the best sniper for the day in F-class with a 22.02 from the four shots.

The only “magpie” winner for the day was David McDonald, who valiantly continued to shoot F-class with iron sights while waiting for his scope to arrive.

Next week shooters will go from one extreme to the other, moving back to 1000 yards, and the day after will gather for the 2019-20 season presentation awards.
