Sports reports: Patrick Evans gets his first hole in one

Patrick Evans gets his first hole in one

Drakes supermarket store manager Patrick Evans has smoked a sweet seven-iron shot straight into the cup on the difficult 17th hole at Murray Bridge Golf Club to score his first ever ace.

It also gave him an eagle and a clean-out of the eagle’s nest, to the tune of $100 worth of balls.

You’ve gotta feel for Jeff Morgan, who had scored a hole in one on the 11th on Wednesday but who now can’t have the hole-in-one mug filled up for him gratis at the bar any more.

Evans was keen to take over this bonus immediately.

Meanwhile, Lewis McCabe became the latest newish MBGC member to take out a Saturday competition last Saturday.

Playing in just his fourth competitive round, he powered to a brilliant nett 64 to win the stroke event.

Hitting his straps after a “Barry Crocker” in his previous round, McCabe will now be better known around the club after having his name up in lights.

High class A-grader Greg Lindeberg was unlucky not to win the day after hitting a one-under-par 33 on the back nine for a round of nett 64, but even that wasn’t quite good enough.

Still, it was a great round by Lindeberg, with Keith Durham right on his hammer as runner-up in A grade with a nett 65.

Lawerance Crack and old warhorse “Aussie” Bob McCormick won the B and C grades, respectively, each scoring superb nett 65s.

Tailem Bend-Jervois rivalry continues on the bowling green

Tailem Bend have scored a 63-61 win over Jervois at Jervois to give itself a big chance of climbing off the bottom, and are now just two points adrift of their cross river rivals.

Rob Hales, Sam Shepherd, Con Jones and Glenda Shepherd overcame a slow start to triumph 29-20 over Graham Fromm, Trevor Mann, Derek Vanderzon and Shane Fromm.

After trailing 7-1 after three ends, Hales piled on 23 shots to two to take control with a lead of 15 shots.

Fromm rallied in the second half, closing to within five shots, but a big conversion by Hales followed by an errant drive by Fromm on the next end put the final margin out to nine shots.

Travis Schenke, David Hoare, Stuart Rooke and Kevin McDonald held sway for most of their match against Graeme Herbert, Rodger Zarantonello, Steve Kroehn and Neil Morris before conceding the lead with two ends remaining.

Still, they were good enough to take a 20-18 win with a two on the final end.

Shawn Hicks, Jeremy Scannell, Graham Schenke and Grace Hameister dropped a four on the first end and were soon down 7-0, but had clawed back to within a shot at the break, trailing 8-9.

Hicks continued the rally in the second half, dropping just two more ends and going on to win comfortably, 23-14.

Karoonda returned to form with a thumping 71-37 win over Murray Bridge, climbing back to the top of the ladder in the process.

All rinks won convincingly, with Rowan Zadow, Garry Mason, Malcolm McKenzie and John Wegner 14-shot winners over Darren McIntosh, Brian Traeger, Mark Callery and Brian Leckie.

Ian Symonds, Gary Zadow, Jake Venning and Malcolm Waechter won by the same margin over Bruce Attrill, David Kempe, Charlie DiSanto and Tony Gill.

Josh Porker, Shaun Wood, Erin O’Malley and Don Loller had the closest match of the day, but still prevailed by six shots over Paul Smart, Ben Traeger, Peter Shilton and Andrew Meddle.

The remaining match between RSL and Mannum at the RSL was called off due to the heat, perhaps a little surprisingly given that Jervois and Karoonda did not reach the cut-off temperature.
