A day of searing heat last Saturday brought about the first enforcement of Murray Bridge Golf Club's hot weather policy for the season, with 35 players all teeing off in a par competition by 9am.
Great scoring was the order of the day, with many players managing to beat their handicaps, and none more so than gentle giant Jason Stone, who played in the last group.
Recording a superb score of five up, he pipped the unlucky Greg Lannan on a countback after Lannan shot the same brilliant score.
It came down to who had the better back nine and big Stone was never going to lose out here.
With his putter catching on fire, he shot a stunning six up 36-off-the-stick final nine holes, which was pretty out there for a 16 handicapper.
Draining a monster 20 foot putt down the hill on the 16th tells us all we need to know about how well he was putting.
Well done big fella - it was good to see another different Saturday winner up there in lights.
All players who filled the placegetters had terrific rounds: "Steady Eddie" with a ripping four up, Joel McFee, Aaron Hissey, Ryan Anderson and Lucas Merchant each with stylish three ups and James Lipp, who can't keep out of the winners' list, with another two up.
It looks like another warm one will head our way this Saturday; let's see if the golf is just as hot again for the Stableford competition on offer.
Jervois hand it to the RSL in Lower Murray Bowls
Jervois have handed RSL a 74-40 thumping at Jervois, winning on all three rinks for the second successive week to consolidate second spot, while Karoonda maintain their unbeaten run and sit well clear on top.
Kevin Spinks, Graham Schenke, Denis Hicks and Grace Hameister were easy 27-11 winners over Jason Sipos, Garry Daniel, Kerri Bolt and James Galbraith, with too much being left to the RSL skipper to try to keep his side in the game.
A five on the fifth end was the catalyst for a scoring spree which had Spinks 11 shots ahead by the break, with the biggest threat being a five foot brown snake which slithered across the green.
Sipos managed to string four ends together after the break, but Spinks finished strongly in a solid team effort.
Graeme Herbert, Tim Hicks, Jeremy Scannell and Neil Morris made a strong start against Noel Kneebone, Bob Solley, Matt Wynne and David Newell before going on to a convincing 28-14 win.
Kneebone closed to within 5 shots with a 4 on the 13th, but Herbert was largely untroubled, and a 6 on the final end rubbed salt into the wounds.
Graham Fromm, Daryl Little, Bruce Smith and Shane Fromm were also quickly out of the blocks and 8 shots up at the break over David Graham, Karen Kneebone, Sam Mammone and Allan Wooldridge.
The lead was out to 11 shots after 17 ends, but Graham picked up seven shots to nil over the last four ends to go down 19-15.
Tailem Bend put in a solid performance against Murray Bridge, but still went home pointless after going own by 12 shots, 62-50.
Darren McIntosh, Tony Trewren, Charlie DiSanto and Paul Smart battled to shake off Michael Thorne, Steven Gordge, Ian Shepherd and Con Jones until a four on the 17th opened up a seven shot lead.
Successive singles made the game safe before a late four to Thorne saw the home side win 21-15.
Ben Traeger, Helen Lindner, Brian Traeger and Gerry Penta could only win 2 ends outside of a seven end burst against Travis Schenke, Merv Stevens, Kevin McDonald and Grantley Byrne, but that was enough to see them prevail by four shots, 20-16.
Schenke led 11-2 after eight ends, but his nine shot advantage had become an eight shot deficit before he scored again, with a four and three threes to Traeger among the damage.
Four singles on the trot gave Shenke some hope with two ends to play, but a single to Traeger ensured the win.
Bruce Attrill, Mike Ferris, Andrew Meddle and Brian Leckie were possibly also a little fortunate to escape with a 2 shot win after only winning nine ends as well.
Every time David Hoare, Rob Hales, Chris Slattery and Stuart Rooke seriously challenged, Attrill was able to respond with a multiple to quell the challenge.
Even so, Hoare drew within a shot going into the final end before conceding a single to go down 21-19.
